Peace Toys

by Vanessa Torres

Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Alex Turner and Community Outreach Specialist (COS) Vanessa Torres participated in a holiday event 18 December, 2009 at a local community center that promoted a fresh start for youth and peace in the communities of Norfolk.

The Peace Toy Event brought attention to crime and violence as children of all ages brought in a violent toy such as a gun or a knife to exchange for nonviolent game, or a peace toy.  Local churches and non-profit organizations donated over 300 toys to give away just days before Christmas Day.

SAC Turner represented the Norfolk Field Office by speaking about the importance of partnerships and open dialogue between residents and the law-enforcement community. In addition, officers from Norfolk Police Department encouraged everyone to resolve conflicts without aggression by speaking about the consequences of committing violent crimes.

To demonstrate a desire for change, participants were asked to recite a Pledge for Peace provided by COS Torres, stating their commitment to stay crime free, and abide by the laws of their country.

Afterwards, children of all ages were provided with an opportunity to meet and greet someone from the law enforcement community.

Attendees were treated to musicians, door prizes and light refreshments.
